Maximilian Wittek avoids leg amputation after compartment syndrome

In May 2026 VfL Bochum defender Maximilian Wittek suffered a thigh injury during a match against Arminia Bielefeld. The swelling worsened and doctors diagnosed compartment syndrome, a medical emergency that can cut off blood flow and lead to amputation.

The Bochum team doctor acted quickly, arranging emergency surgery that saved Wittek’s leg. He underwent four operations and now bears a 20‑centimetre scar. After rehabilitation, Wittek returned to the starting lineup for the season‑opening game against Hertha BSC, although Bochum lost the match.

Wittek credited the prompt medical response for preventing a “bitter‑bad” outcome and expressed gratitude to the medical staff.
