Maximos Karakopoulos honors victims of the 1922 Smyrna massacre
During a memorial service in Vounaina, Greek MP and historian Dr. Maximos Karakopoulos honored the 50 Soultzoubalides victims who were killed during the 1922 Smyrna massacre alongside Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Smyrna.
Karakopoulos described the Asia Minor Catastrophe as the greatest national tragedy in Greek history, surpassing the fall of Constantinople in 1453. He characterized the 1922 massacre as the final act of a genocide targeting Christians in the East, carried out by the Ottoman Empire and the Kemalist movement with German involvement.
The commemoration took place at the monument of Chrysostomos in Vounaina, led by the local priest, Father Miltiadis, to remember those who remained in Smyrna for over a year before their deaths.
