MAXXI Museum hosts major Sophie Calle retrospective in Rome

The MAXXI museum in Rome is hosting ‘Matrimoni, Rotture e Funerali inclusi’, the most extensive monograph of French conceptual artist Sophie Calle ever realized in Italy. Curated by Simona Antonacci in collaboration with the artist, the exhibition features eight projects spanning from 1978 to 2026.

The collection includes photography, video, installations, and autobiographical narratives that explore the boundaries between public and private life. Themes such as love, separation, mourning, memory, and loss are central to the works, which include Calle’s documentation of her mother’s final moments and the countdown to the end of a personal relationship.

In conjunction with the exhibition, a new permanent work has been created for the city of Rome in collaboration with the Non-Catholic Cemetery for Foreigners, titled ‘La tomba che racchiude i segreti dei viandanti’.
