May el-Toukhy uses symbolic attire at Venice Film Festival

At the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, director May el-Toukhy drew significant attention for her attire during the premiere of her film, ‘Woman Unknown’. While her white tunic appeared simple from the front, the back featured a striking scarlet design composed of red tassels designed to resemble a bloodstain or wound.

The visual choice serves as a direct symbolic link to the film’s themes. Set in 1945 Denmark following the Nazi occupation, ‘Woman Unknown’ explores the lives of women accused of being ‘horizontal collaborators’ due to relationships with German soldiers. The film depicts the public humiliation and violence these women faced, including forced hair shaving and physical branding.
