Venice Film Festival: ‘Woman Unknown’ wins Golden Lion

The 83rd Venice International Film Festival concluded with the Danish drama ‘Woman Unknown’, directed by May el-Toukhy, winning the Golden Lion. The film, set in post-WWII Denmark, follows a domestic worker whose past relationship with a German soldier threatens her future. El-Toukhy was one of only two female directors in the main competition, a fact that prompted jury president Maggie Gyllenhaal to address structural gender inequality in the film industry.

Other major winners include Mathilde Arcel, who received the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for her role in ‘Woman Unknown’, and John Malkovich, who won Best Actor for ‘Wild Horse Nine’. The Grand Jury Prize went to Lee Chang-dong for ‘Possible Love’, while Ilya Khrzhanovsky won the Silver Lion for Best Director for the project ‘DAU’.

The documentary ‘NAZA’, directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, received the Special Jury Prize for its coverage of military strategies and civilian casualties in Gaza. The festival also highlighted diverse international perspectives, ranging from South Korean social dramas to Russian experimental projects.
