Maya communities protest removal of mining company closure seals

Maya communities in Tebec, Hotzuc, and Petecbiltún are maintaining road blockades to protest the removal of closure seals from mining companies. The organization Utsil Kuxtal reported that the Umán City Council allegedly lifted the seals for companies Materiales Ku, Mapsa, and Procon.

These companies are accused of responsibility for the death of a young person following an accident involving a mining cargo truck. Protesters claim the removal of these seals violates previous agreements with authorities and increases local risk. Additionally, community members have expressed frustration with the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) for failing to provide an effective response to environmental and social damage complaints filed over a year ago.
