Maya Ka’an named one of National Geographic’s best destinations for 2027

National Geographic has included Maya Ka’an, a region in Quintana Roo, Mexico, in its 'Best of the World 2027' list. The selection highlights the area as one of 25 premier global destinations, specifically noting its community-based tourism model.

The region, which encompasses 78 indigenous Mayan communities, is recognized for its ability to link environmental conservation with local economic development. Key attractions mentioned include the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, the Muyil Lagoon, and various cultural experiences such as traditional embroidery workshops in X-Pichil and ancestral culinary practices in Señor.

Mexican tourism authorities, including Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa and Secretary of Tourism Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, stated that this recognition validates a strategy to diversify the Mexican Caribbean's offerings beyond traditional sun and beach tourism. The model aims to empower indigenous communities to lead their own productive projects while preserving their cultural and biological heritage.
