Maya Morsy addresses violent crimes within close social circles in Egypt

Egypt's Minister of Social Solidarity, Maya Morsy, addressed concerns regarding violent crimes committed by close associates, such as relatives and friends. She stated that while these incidents cause significant social anxiety by undermining psychological and social security, they do not currently constitute a scientific “social phenomenon.” Instead, they are classified as “repeated individual incidents” or “indicators of a shift in criminal methods.”

Morsy noted that according to data from the Ministry of Interior and the National Center for Social and Criminological Research, Egypt's crime rates remain within normal or low limits compared to global averages. She attributed the public perception of a rising crime wave to the rapid spread of news on social media platforms, which can create a state of “social panic,” making individual crimes appear to be a widespread pattern.

The Minister emphasized the concept of “mindful trust,” suggesting that while trust in relatives and friends is a social cornerstone, individuals should maintain a balance between emotion and safety. She clarified that being aware of personal safety does not mean constant suspicion or severing family ties, but rather exercising wisdom to protect oneself from potential harm.
