Maya & Samar to receive U.S. VOD release via Quiver

The lesbian romantic drama ‘Maya & Samar’ has secured North American distribution rights through Quiver Distribution. The film is scheduled for release on VOD platforms across the United States on September 4, 2026.

Directed by Anita Doron and written by Tamara Faith Berger, the Canadian-Greek co-production is set in Athens. It follows the intense relationship between Maya, a Canadian journalist, and Samar, a queer Afghan refugee. The film has drawn attention due to its NC-17 rating in the United States, which was assigned for sexual content and graphic nudity.

Doron has criticized the rating, describing it as ‘shocking’ and suggesting that heterosexual films with similar content do not face equivalent restrictions. Produced by Robert Lantos, Julia Rosenberg, and Laura Lanktree, the film previously premiered at the Thessaloniki Film Festival and saw a Canadian theatrical release earlier in 2026.
