Mayawati opposes creamy layer concept for SC and ST reservations

Mayawati, the national president of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), has expressed strong opposition to the introduction of a 'creamy layer' concept for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) reservations.

In posts on the social media platform X, Mayawati stated that reservation is a tool for social change, economic liberation, and self-respect for historically oppressed communities. She argued that applying a creamy layer rule would contradict the humanitarian constitutional objectives set by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, as caste-based discrimination cannot be measured solely by economic progress.

Mayawati also criticized RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, who recently suggested that reservation has been politicized and that beneficiaries should voluntarily relinquish their benefits. She characterized such views as being driven by narrow political interests and casteist ideologies. Furthermore, she urged the central government to provide effective legal representation in court to ensure SC and ST communities remain exempt from the creamy layer classification.
