Mayday vocalist Ashin's signature facial expression sparks discussion

Mayday vocalist Ashin recently drew online attention following a photograph taken with Apple executive John Ternus at an Apple product launch event. The image sparked debate among netizens regarding Ashin’s signature ‘W-shaped’ pursed-lip expression, with some critics accusing him of acting cute for the camera.

Longtime fans have clarified that the expression is not a performance but a long-standing habit stemming from past insecurities. According to fans and previous media appearances, Ashin felt self-conscious about a gap between his front teeth early in his career. He once shared on a talk show hosted by Kevin Tsai that seeing fans hold signs mentioning his teeth during an event caused him significant embarrassment.

Despite undergoing orthodontic treatment, the habit of pursing his lips to avoid showing his teeth has persisted. Fans have since embraced the look, affectionately referring to it as his ‘cat mouth’ and noting that it has become a recognizable part of his identity.
