Mayfield townhouse fire forces resident evacuations
A major fire destroyed a two-storey townhouse on Elizabeth Street in Mayfield, forcing the evacuation of residents in surrounding units as a precaution. The blaze, which began around 5:45 pm, caused significant structural damage to the affected unit and threatened neighboring properties.
NSW Fire and Rescue deployed nine fire trucks, local police, and two HAZMAT units to the scene. While HAZMAT teams monitored for potential asbestos risks, no immediate concerns were reported. Emergency services worked through the night, concluding the operation around 6:20 am.
No injuries were reported, and all residents from the destroyed building and surrounding units were accounted for. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The site has been handed over to property management for assessment, and it remains unclear when displaced residents will be able to return to their homes.
