Mayo Clinic experts warn on critical stroke symptom recognition

Medical experts from the Mayo Clinic emphasize that rapid recognition and treatment of a stroke are critical to improving survival rates and reducing the risk of long-term disability. A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is suddenly interrupted, either by a blood clot in an artery (ischemic stroke) or by a ruptured blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke).

Dr. Josephine Huang, a neurologist at the Mayo Clinic in Florida, notes that “when it comes to treating a stroke, time is critical.” Even if symptoms appear to improve or disappear, medical professionals warn that individuals should never delay seeking emergency medical evaluation.

Key warning signs often appear suddenly and include facial numbness or weakness, difficulty speaking or understanding language, vision changes, dizziness, and loss of balance or coordination. The BE FAST acronym is recommended as a tool to remember primary warning signs, focusing on Balance, Eyes, and other sudden physical impairments.
