Mayo Clinic study finds dogs improve stroke rehabilitation engagement
A randomized trial published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings suggests that involving trained dogs in rehabilitation sessions can increase patient engagement and activity levels following a stroke. The study, conducted at the Mayo Clinic, followed 50 hospitalized patients. One group received standard rehabilitation, including physical, occupational, and speech therapy, while the second group participated in sessions involving therapy dogs.
In the dog-assisted sessions, patients engaged in activities such as brushing a dog's fur with a rehabilitated hand, walking alongside a dog, or retrieving a ball. These activities resulted in higher participation and longer periods of activity compared to the standard program. However, researchers noted that the study was small and focused on engagement rather than long-term motor recovery or autonomy, necessitating larger studies for definitive conclusions.
Stroke rehabilitation is critical for stimulating neuroplasticity and recovering motor, cognitive, and functional abilities.
