Mayong and Pobitora transition toward cultural and wildlife tourism
The regions of Mayong and Pobitora in Assam are undergoing a transformation from a focus on mystical folklore to a growing tourism circuit. Mayong, historically known for its reputation regarding tantra, mantra, and ancient lore, is being integrated with the neighboring Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary to create a diverse travel destination.
Pobitora, which holds the highest density of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, has seen a significant reduction in illegal poaching due to strict conservation efforts and community involvement. This success has bolstered visitor confidence and provided new economic opportunities for local villages.
Beyond wildlife, experts highlight the potential for cultural tourism through Mayong’s ancient manuscripts, indigenous medicine, archaeological ruins, and oral traditions. State leadership has also expressed interest in developing these untapped cultural assets.
