Mayor Carlos Peña Ortiz Denies Links to Illegal Refinery in Reynosa
Reynosa Mayor Carlos Peña Ortiz publicly rejected accusations by federal deputy Federico Döring that the municipal government was connected to a clandestine oil refinery seized by the Federal Attorney General's Office (FGR) in the Brecha El Becerro area on July 22. Peña emphasized that municipalities in Tamaulipas have no legal authority to inspect, tax, or regulate hydrocarbon installations, stating that any investigation should be conducted by the appropriate state or federal agencies.
The mayor also responded to claims from local activist Félix Rendón, leader of the group “Juntos Rescatemos Reynosa,” who accused Peña of charging municipal fees and defended workers victimized by alleged abuses of traffic police. Both sides have exchanged sharp criticisms on social media, keeping the public in a state of anticipation over potential legal actions.
