Mayor Cristian Zamora of Cuenca Faces Severe Digestive Illness During Suspension

Cristian Zamora, the mayor of Cuenca, Ecuador, is under a six‑month suspension after a court ruling by the Tribunal Contencioso Electoral. He disclosed a complex digestive disorder that began about a year ago and worsened markedly over the last five weeks, forcing him to be hospitalized twice.

During the illness his body stopped tolerating meats, seafood and many other foods, leaving him to survive on soups, avocado, yuca and liquefied papillas. After a trip to Morocco, where he was elected co‑president of the Cities and Local Governments United (CGLU), he spent a week in bed due to severe decompensation. He now receives therapies to restore his ability to eat, noting gradual improvement though inflammation of the intestinal tract remains.

Zamora thanked supporters for their concern and said recent medical exams were more favorable, indicating a slow recovery despite ongoing challenges.
