Alfredo Mantovano oversees closure of Gioia Tauro tendopoli and Terra dei Fuochi cleanup in Calabria and Campania

Alfredo Mantovano, the Under‑Secretary to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, visited the regions of Calabria and Campania to assess government‑led remediation projects. In San Ferdinando he inspected the dismantling of the makeshift settlement (tendopoli) on the Piana di Gioia Tauro, which housed about 2,500 people in 2018 and was fully closed within twenty days. The removal is part of a broader plan to replace the temporary camp with stable housing and to launch a “solidarity farm” eco‑village, funded with €3.6 million.

In Rosarno, Mantovano toured renovated housing in the Serricella district, a project costing €2.37 million. In Naples he chaired the eleventh meeting of the inter‑agency “Terra dei Fuochi” control room, joined by Vice‑Minister Vannia Gava, Campania President Roberto Fico and Mayor Gaetano Manfredi. Authorities have removed roughly 10,000 tonnes of waste from contaminated sites and are installing video surveillance at about 200 priority locations; the control‑room facility is slated for completion by 8 August. These actions are coordinated among the special commissioner, regional presidents, local mayors and the Carabinieri forest command, aiming to curb illegal dumping, improve public health and restore the environment in the affected southern Italian areas.
