Mayor Giorgos Marinakis addresses New Local Government Code implementation

Giorgos Marinakis, Mayor of Rethymno and President of EDEYA, participated as a speaker at the first workshop regarding the practical application of the New Local Government Code in Athens. The workshop facilitated dialogue between the Ministry of Interior, local government representatives, regional authorities, and legal experts to bridge the gap between the new institutional framework and its practical implementation.

During the session, Marinakis addressed the status of Development Organizations, calling for immediate legislative amendments to resolve operational issues caused by their classification as General Government Entities by ELSTAT. He emphasized that such changes are vital for these organizations to continue supporting municipalities and regions effectively.

Additionally, Marinakis discussed the new legal framework for municipal water supply and sewerage companies (DEYA). He highlighted recent Ministry of Environment regulations that mandate the integration of specific municipal water entities into EYDAP and EYATH, affecting regions including Attica, Boeotia, Phocis, Euboea, Thessaloniki, and Chalkidiki.
