Mayor Giulio Gerli of Striano under house arrest after death threats; park project continues

On July 8, 2024, Giulio Gerli, mayor of Striano in the province of Naples, was threatened while inspecting a confiscated plot earmarked for an animal‑shelter park funded with €200,000. A 67‑year‑old local man, Giuseppe Riso, allegedly shouted “Ti vengo ad uccidere fino a dove vendi il pesce” (I’ll come to kill you up to where you sell fish) and was later placed under house arrest with an electronic bracelet following a judge’s order in Torre Annunziata.

Prosecutors led by Nunzio Fragliasso and Carabinieri investigators concluded the threat aimed to halt the municipal project. Despite the intimidation, the municipality confirmed the works will continue, citing regional support and statements from ANCI president Gaetano Manfredi emphasizing institutional resolve against intimidation.
