Mayor Karen Bass defends LAPD chief and addresses homelessness in campaign
As the Los Angeles mayoral campaign enters its final weeks, Mayor Karen Bass has defended LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell and addressed the department's role during federal immigration enforcement. Bass stated that the LAPD's obligation during ICE raids is to protect the broader community and maintain public safety rather than assisting federal agents.
Bass also commented on the city's homelessness crisis, noting that over 23,000 people have been removed from the streets and encampments near schools have decreased. However, she acknowledged the profound dysfunction within the system, specifically citing mismanagement allegations at the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA).
Regarding the election, a new poll from BSP Research shows Bass holding a 12-point lead among Latino voters, with 40% support compared to 28% for challenger Nithya Raman. This result contrasts with a previous survey that indicated Raman held a significant lead among the same demographic. The poll indicates Bass's strongest support among Spanish-speaking voters and those in South Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley.
