Greenland security deal expands US military presence in the Arctic
The United States, Denmark, and Greenland have signed a trilateral security agreement in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly to expand the American military presence in the Arctic. The accord allows for the modernization and expansion of the Pituffik Space Base and the establishment of new defense areas in Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig.
Under the terms of the deal, the US may deploy a 'Golden Dome' defense system to protect against ballistic missile threats. The agreement also grants US forces broad operational access, including the ability for aircraft to fly over and land anywhere in Greenland, and for vessels to access territorial waters. Furthermore, non-NATO countries are prohibited from establishing military bases or making sensitive investments in Greenland without express US approval.
While the agreement significantly increases the US military footprint, it reaffirms Greenland's status within the Kingdom of Denmark and recognizes its right to self-determination. The security arrangement is designed to remain in effect even if Greenland chooses to become an independent nation in the future, provided it maintains its commitment to NATO.
