Mayor Mamdani backs NYC Delivery Protection Act

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced his support for the Delivery Protection Act, a proposed City Council bill aimed at regulating high-volume delivery operations. The legislation seeks to address issues related to e-commerce traffic, such as double-parked vans, curb congestion, and the placement of warehouses near residential areas.

A key component of the act involves changing last-mile delivery practices by requiring companies to use regular employees rather than independent contractors. Supporters, including the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, argue the move will improve worker pay and benefits while holding large corporations accountable for delivery incidents.

Amazon, the company most significantly impacted by the proposed rules, opposes the measure. Opponents argue that the new licensing requirements and employment mandates could lead to increased costs, slower delivery times, and may prompt companies to move distribution centers out of New York City to avoid regulation.
