Mayor Mamdani sues to block NYC teacher union bonus law

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is engaged in a legal battle with the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), the city’s largest teachers union, which previously endorsed his mayoral candidacy. The conflict centers on the “RESPECT Check Act,” a law passed unanimously by the City Council that provides one-time $10,000 bonuses to low-paid education paraprofessionals and school aides, many of whom work with students with special needs.

Mamdani filed a lawsuit to block the legislation, arguing that the bonuses violate New York state’s Taylor Law, which governs collective bargaining and protects the rights of public employees to negotiate compensation. This stance marks a shift for the mayor, who had previously expressed support for the bonuses during his campaign.

In response, the UFT has filed a motion to intervene in the legal proceedings. UFT President Michael Mulgrew stated that the union was prepared for the lawsuit and maintains that the legislation was carefully drafted to comply with state law. The dispute has created a significant rift between the mayor’s administration and a key political constituency.
