Mayor Marco Bonilla unveils $386 million first phase of Chihuahua’s Poniente 5 highway

Mayor Marco Bonilla presented to the Chihuahua Regional Economic Development Council the first phase of the Poniente 5 "Luis H. Álvarez" roadway, a 21‑kilometre project intended to improve city mobility and accommodate growing vehicle numbers. The initial stage covers 3.27 km between Avenida La Cantera and Homero, targeting neighbourhoods such as Bosque Real, Misión del Bosque, Viñedos and Encinillas.

The phase requires an investment of 386 million pesos, with the state contributing 150 million pesos and the municipality covering the balance through a financing scheme to be reviewed by the state congress. The plan also uses an existing right‑of‑way from the Federal Electricity Commission and has allocated roughly 7 million pesos for federal permits and environmental compliance. Officials expect the new segment to divert more than 6,000 vehicles per peak hour from the heavily‑used Periférico de la Juventud, easing congestion and enhancing traffic flow.

Construction will employ a fully concrete hydraulic design for durability, and the project is awaiting further resolutions before work can commence.
