Mayor Mario Kordić addresses repeated fires at Mostar waste depot

Mostar mayor Mario Kordić said the recent fire was on a municipal hard‑waste landfill, not the nearby sanitary Uborak site, and that the facility holds all required permits. He warned that fires have been occurring almost daily for the past 15‑20 days, suggesting possible sabotage, and stressed that political pressure and procedural obstacles are hindering the city's response.

Kordić announced that the city, declared an extraordinary state, is accelerating cleanup, including demolition of the burned‑out hall, and aims to start active remediation within the week. He criticised federal inspection actions from the previous year that blocked the depot despite the city having a valid environmental permit, leading to waste accumulation on the streets and a prolonged emergency.

The mayor emphasized that waste‑site decisions are under higher‑level authority, not local municipalities, and that ongoing legal challenges and activist threats are deliberately slowing progress.
