Mayor of Campestre do Maranhão warns of service cuts following election results
Fernando Bermuda, the mayor of Campestre do Maranhão, has warned that municipal public services may face interruptions or cuts following recent elections. In a video, Bermuda suggested that the defeat of his political ally, Flávio Bolsonaro, and the reelection of President Lula could lead to a loss of parliamentary support and federal resources.
The mayor stated that citizens who voted for opposing candidates should prepare for potential difficulties in essential areas such as health, infrastructure, and hospital services. He specifically mentioned that the municipality might no longer host anniversary or New Year's Eve celebrations due to budget constraints.
Despite these warnings, official data shows the municipality received significant funding for social programs in 2026. Additionally, two deputies supported by the mayor, Pedro Lucas Fernandes and Paulo Casé Fernandes, were elected with high vote counts. The city administration issued a statement clarifying that there is no intention to suspend specialized services, but rather a need to study temporary reorganizations of service offerings due to budgetary uncertainties for 2027.
