Mayor of Esperanza arrested in crackdown on criminal network
The arrest of Isaac Rodríguez Ochoa, the mayor of Esperanza, Puebla, and eight other individuals has disrupted a criminal network linked to the group known as ‘Los Zuñiga’. The arrests occurred during ‘Operativo Enjambre’ on September 7, which involved 23 search warrants.
Authorities allege the group was involved in a protection network that facilitated extortion, kidnapping, drug sales, and the theft of cargo transport. The network reportedly included the mayor, his brother, and a former municipal public security director. A federal judge has since linked the nine detainees to the crimes and imposed preventive detention.
Norberto Limón Ambrosius, a delegate for the National Chamber of Cargo Transport (Canacar) in Veracruz, noted that the operation is significant for the security of the Puebla-Veracruz corridor. This route is a strategic logistics artery for foreign trade, as the Port of Veracruz handles over 70 percent of the country’s imports and exports. The state government of Alejandro Armenta has expressed intentions to continue dismantling criminal structures in the region using advanced technology, such as drones, to restore governance and peace.
