Juchitán Mayor Miguel Sánchez Altamirano arrested for extortion FAST-MOVING
Mexican federal and state authorities arrested Miguel Sánchez Altamirano, the mayor of Juchitán de Zaragoza, Oaxaca, during a coordinated operation known as 'Operativo Enjambre'. Sánchez Altamirano, also known as 'Miguel Quetu', was apprehended alongside Carlos Alberto “N”, alias 'La Parca'. Both individuals face arrest warrants for aggravated extortion and crimes against state security.
Investigations by the Secretariat of Security and Protection of the Citizen (SSPC) link the detainees to a criminal structure allegedly involved in extortion, 'cobro de piso' (protection money) targeting local businesses, drug retail, human trafficking, and homicide. Authorities further suggest the existence of institutional protection schemes that facilitated criminal operations in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region. Some reports identify the mayor's alleged links to 'Los Cromos', a faction associated with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
As part of the investigation, the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) has frozen bank accounts and immobilized assets connected to the criminal network. The operation involved multiple agencies, including the Navy (Semar), the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA), the National Guard, and the Federal Attorney General's Office (FGR).
The arrests have triggered significant social unrest in Juchitán, including road blockades, tire burning, and protests by municipal police, residents, and mototaxista groups demanding the mayor's release.
