Mayor of Miraflores, Peru, forced to wear pollera during infrastructure protests

In the Miraflores district of Huamalíes, Huánuco, Mayor Carlos Carhuapoma Ramos was forced to walk through the streets wearing a traditional pollera (skirt) during a protest by approximately 150 residents.

Demonstrators gathered in front of the District Municipality of Miraflores to protest unfulfilled election promises and incomplete public works. Key grievances include delayed projects regarding water, sewage, roads, and community centers. Residents also criticized the hiring of workers from other localities, claiming it reduces local employment opportunities.

The protest, which previously involved blocking the municipal building, escalated when protesters initially planned to force the mayor to ride a donkey, but instead compelled him to wear the garment. The tension required the deployment of police officers from the Special Services Unit to protect the mayor during the march. Additionally, community members have requested that the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Crimes of Corruption of Officials investigate alleged irregularities within the current administration.
