Nicolás Flores mayor sparks controversy over municipal loan remarks
Nicolás González Elizalde, the mayor of Nicolás Flores, Hidalgo, has sparked significant controversy following remarks made during his second government report. While addressing questions regarding a municipal loan, the PAN official stated, “No me he robado ningún peso; al contrario, si lo robé, fue para dárselo a ustedes” (“I haven't stolen a single peso; on the contrary, if I stole it, it was to give it to you”).
The controversy centers on a loan of approximately 7.3 million pesos obtained from Banobras in October 2025, intended for urban infrastructure and social works. González Elizalde defended the expenditure, claiming that when combined with other municipal funds, the total investment in local works exceeded 25 million pesos. He maintained that the resources were used for the benefit of the population and not for personal gain.
Local legislators, including Miguel Ángel Moreno Zamora, president of the Hidalgo State Congress's Finance and Budget Commission, described the mayor's comments as “unfortunate” and called for oversight. While the mayor asserts that all documentation has been submitted to the Superior Audit Office of Hidalgo, critics and social media users have demanded greater transparency regarding the specific projects and the exact breakdown of the funds used.
