Brazil Federal Government Advances Governance of Mariana Dam Disaster Agreement

The Casa Civil announced that the improvements requested by the Tribunal de Contas da União (TCU) for the monitoring and evaluation mechanisms of the judicial agreement on the Mariana dam rupture are now in progress. The TCU had highlighted weaknesses in the agreement’s result monitoring, prompting the federal government to submit additional information that was accepted and led to a substantial revision of the TCU’s conclusions. The Casa Civil noted that the TCU recognized the existing governance structure and the technical and financial studies already under development. It added that administrative mechanisms are capable of identifying, correcting and mitigating any inconsistencies, and that no irregularities were found concerning federal activities. The agency also said the TCU’s final report proposes further technical measures to accelerate the execution of the Aquaculture and Fisheries Restructuring Fund (FRAP). “After the initial document was issued, the Federal Government provided information that was embraced by the Tribunal and resulted in a substantial revision of the conclusions,” the statement read.

These steps are part of the government’s commitment to transparency and continued dialogue with oversight bodies as it advances the reparations in the Rio Doce basin.
