Mayor of Tieschen banned from all Meta platforms

Martin Weber, the mayor of Tieschen, Austria, has been permanently banned from all Meta platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The suspension followed a social media post in which Weber compared Donald Trump to the AfD political party, suggesting that after electoral victories, parties must demonstrate their ability to govern.

Weber reports that the ban has significantly hindered his ability to perform official duties, as he previously used Facebook and Instagram to share municipal information and WhatsApp to communicate with municipal employees. While the specific reasons for the total lockout remain unclear to him, his legal counsel is considering filing a complaint with the telecommunications regulatory authority, as well as pursuing a lawsuit and an injunction.

A German law firm representing Meta has reportedly contacted Weber, stating they will thoroughly review the reasons for the suspension. Digital experts suggest that such decisions may stem from errors in automated AI moderation tools or high volumes of user reports.
