Zohran Mamdani joins Mexican Independence Day parade in Brooklyn

New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani participated in the Mexican Independence Day parade in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, marking what he described as the first time a city mayor has marched in the event.

During the celebration, which featured traditional music, folk dances such as the ‘Flor de Piña’, ‘Jarabe Tapatío’, and ‘Son Jarocho’, attendees welcomed the mayor with chants of “Mamdani, brother, you are already Mexican!”. Mamdani wore a tricolor sash and expressed pride in the community, stating that Mexican-origin New Yorkers are “the heart of our city and its struggle for a better future.”

The parade, which has been held annually since 1994, serves as a significant cultural expression for the local Mexican community. Mamdani’s participation follows his campaign promises to support immigrant communities and his stated opposition to allowing ICE agents into the city.
