Mayor Zohran Mamdani uses NYPD gym for late-night basketball

Mayor Zohran Mamdani has been using the Det. Steven D. McDonald Police Academy gym in Queens for late-night pickup basketball games with associates. The activity, which began around July, reportedly involves entering the facility through a loading dock during late hours, such as 10 p.m. or 11 p.m.

While some sources suggested the games scrambled academy operations, a spokesperson for the mayor stated that staff were informed the activity would not disrupt training. The NYPD confirmed that Mamdani used the gym during off-hours and has not interfered with recruit training.
