Mayotte activists demand protection against sexist cyberviolence

A petition has been launched in Mayotte calling for a coordinated public response to sexist and sexual cyberviolence. The movement supports Saïrati Assimakou, founder of the association Souboutou Ouhédzé Jilaho, who has faced years of repeated cyberviolence. Following her decision to make public private messages containing sexist and fatphobic content, she recently received death threats and filed a formal complaint.

The association argues that Assimakou’s case represents a broader issue where women who speak out against sexual violence face insults, harassment, and intimidation, which can lead to self-censorship and isolation. The petition demands that threats against Assimakou be taken seriously with immediate danger assessments and protection measures.

Long-term goals include establishing a departmental convention for prevention and care. The association seeks to unite local authorities, state services, the justice system, security forces, and health and social actors to provide legal, psychological, social, and digital support for victims. They also advocate for better handling of complaints, professional training, and prevention programs for youth.
