Mayotte expands foreign cooperation as diplomatic tensions surface

A delegation from Taiwan, led by Vice‑Minister of Foreign Affairs François Wu Chih‑Chung, completed a three‑day visit to Mayotte, exploring cooperation in fisheries, waste recycling and student exchanges. The officials highlighted Mayotte’s new economic zone at Badamiers but no formal agreements were signed, describing the talks as an initial contact phase.

Separately, the regional government of Kara in Togo and the Department of Mayotte signed a decentralized cooperation convention covering economy, education, health, governance, sport and the environment. The agreement was immediately rejected by the Comorian foreign ministry, which called it contrary to international law and the African Union’s resolutions, underscoring the long‑standing dispute over Mayotte’s status.

Both episodes illustrate Mayotte’s effort to attract foreign partnerships while navigating diplomatic sensitivities involving neighbouring states.
