Mayotte schools face vandalism and classroom shortages

Schools in Mayotte are facing significant operational challenges as the new academic year begins. In Mamoudzou, the Abdourahamane Soilihi school was targeted by vandals who reportedly entered through the roof. The perpetrators stole equipment, including all fans from one classroom, which impacts the ability of students and teachers to manage high temperatures.

Broadly, the island struggles with classroom shortages. Approximately 120,000 students have returned to school, but 70% of institutions still operate using rotation systems to manage capacity. At Magnélé school, students are split into morning and afternoon shifts to ensure they receive the required 24 hours of weekly instruction. While some progress has been made with the reopening of several classrooms, construction projects continue in areas like Vahibé and Kawéni to address the ongoing infrastructure deficit.
