Maysan officials threaten civil disobedience over Al-Shayb border closure
Protests have erupted in Iraq's Maysan province following the government's decision to close the Al-Shayb border crossing with Iran. On Sunday, October 25, 2026, truck drivers and local residents demonstrated by blocking the Bazarkan road, which leads to oil company sites, to demand the reopening of the crossing.
Mustafa Adair al-Mahmoudawi, Chairman of the Maysan Provincial Council, issued a deadline of Thursday for the government to restore access to the border. He warned that failure to reach a solution would lead to civil disobedience and the cutting of all roads connecting Maysan to the rest of Iraq. Al-Mahmoudawi stated that the closure threatens the livelihoods of approximately 4,000 citizens who depend on the crossing.
The Iraqi government, through spokesperson Haider al-Aboudi, attributed the closure to technical and operational unreadiness. However, protesters and local officials claim the decision is a response to American pressure to tighten economic sanctions against Tehran. The closure has already caused sharp increases in the prices of fruits and vegetables in local Maysan markets.
