Mazara del Vallo faces mounting waste dumping crisis

Residents of Mazara del Vallo, Sicily, have reported extensive piles of uncollected waste on sidewalks, streets and in public squares, creating foul odors, vermin and discomfort for locals and tourists. Complaints include abandoned bags on the main thoroughfare Via Piersanti Mattarella, the Villaggio Pescatori area and several peripheral neighborhoods, with some bed‑and‑breakfast guests leaving early because of the conditions.

The municipal police command, aided by the city’s environment assessor and vice‑mayor Vito Billardello, has installed more than 200 surveillance cameras, including 14 new fixed posts and mobile “e‑killer” units, to identify illegal dumpers. Six offenders have been pinpointed; two drivers have already lost their licences and fines have been issued, while investigations continue for the remaining cases. Authorities also cite a recent reduction in organic‑waste collection days as a factor worsening the problem.
