Calabria and Sicily face transport and fishing strikes over fuel costs

Transport and agricultural sectors in Southern Italy are facing significant unrest due to rising fuel costs and economic instability. In Calabria, Fedralog has confirmed a 120-hour transport strike scheduled to begin on October 16, 2026. This blockade, which may impact the A2 del Mediterraneo and SS106 Jonica highways, threatens to disrupt the supply of essential goods like milk, dairy, fruit, and vegetables to supermarkets. While the Calabria Region has proposed a 15 million euro fund to mitigate fuel costs, transport operators have deemed current institutional proposals insufficient.

Simultaneously, the agricultural sector is protesting high diesel prices, with farmers in Lamezia Terme staging demonstrations near strategic infrastructure like the airport and railway station. In Sicily, the fishing industry is in crisis. Following the end of the biological fishing ban, many fleets have refused to return to sea due to unsustainable management costs and fuel prices. Sicilian fishing representatives are calling for a regional solidarity fund of up to 17 million euros to support the sector's socio-economic survival.
