Mazatlán drives domestic tourism as Pacific beach rivals compete
Mazatlán’s tourism board reports rising competition among Mexico’s Pacific coast beach destinations as foreign visitor numbers decline in places like Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos. Edna Gutiérrez, director of promotion for the Asociación de Hoteles y Empresas Turísticas de Mazatlán, said the shift toward domestic travelers is driven by international factors beyond the industry’s control.
To capture the domestic market, Mazatlán has launched aggressive price promotions, strategic hotel tariffs, and marketing campaigns. The city’s hotel occupancy reached roughly 80 % on weekends in May and early June, and organizers are counting on events such as sports tournaments, conferences and new air connections to cities in the north, centre and Bajío to push occupancy toward full capacity this summer.
The approach includes offering lower rates for local guests, leveraging the destination’s reputation for safety, cuisine and authentic attractions, and coordinating with airlines to improve connectivity. Competing Pacific beach towns are responding with similar pricing tactics, intensifying the battle for Mexico’s internal tourism dollars.
