Mazatlán prison director removed following deadly riots

Enrique Mora García, the director of the El Castillo Penitentiary in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, has been temporarily removed from his position. The decision, announced by state security officials and Governor Graciela Domínguez Nava, aims to prevent interference in administrative and criminal investigations into two violent riots that occurred on October 8 and 9, 2026.

The first riot, which took place during family visiting hours, resulted in nine inmate deaths and the death of a two-year-old child visiting the facility. This incident also left approximately 16 to 17 inmates injured by gunfire. A second riot the following day involved the use of knives and resulted in the deaths of two additional inmates.

Federal and state authorities have taken several measures to stabilize the facility, including the transfer of 49 inmates from Sinaloa prisons to other states to reduce overcrowding. Security forces, including the Mexican Navy, have increased surveillance at the prison. Officials have linked the internal violence to ongoing disputes between Sinaloa Cartel factions, specifically 'Los Chapitos' and 'Los Mayos'.
