El Castillo Penitentiary: 12 dead in Sinaloa prison violence

A series of violent clashes at the El Castillo Penitentiary Centre in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, has resulted in at least 12 deaths and numerous injuries within a 48-hour period. The first incident, occurring on Thursday, left nine inmates and one minor visitor dead, with 16 others injured. The violence reportedly involved the use of firearms. A second fight broke out on Friday at a different module within the same facility, claiming the lives of two additional inmates.

Security forces, including the Mexican Army, the National Guard, and the Navy, intervened to restore order and secure the perimeter. In response to the escalating crisis, the Sinaloa Public Security Secretariat has suspended all prison visits as a precaution. The state prosecutor has opened investigations into the incidents, specifically looking into charges of intentional homicide.

Following these events, the Mexican federal government, with support from President Claudia Sheinbaum, announced plans to fund and construct a new, modern penitentiary in Sinaloa to improve security and control. The state governor, Graciela Domínguez, will collaborate by providing the necessary land for the project. The incidents highlight ongoing security challenges in Sinaloa, a region frequently impacted by conflicts between drug cartel factions.
