Mazatlán receives over 1,300 military personnel to boost tourist security

Around 400 soldiers from the Mexican Secretariat of National Defense arrived in Mazatlán on Wednesday to reinforce security during the holiday season, according to interim mayor Minerva Osuna Zavala. The troops were stationed at the city's southern port exit, a local secondary school and the Germán Evers sports field, and will patrol federal highways linking Mazatlán with Durango and Nayarit as well as conduct patrols within the city.

A second contingent of roughly 900 soldiers was deployed early Thursday, bringing the total force in the city to more than 1,300 troops. Officials said the additional troops will expand coverage across the municipality, support investigations into recent security incidents, and help safeguard the large influx of cruise‑ship visitors such as the Carnival Panorama, which docked with 4,841 passengers and 1,424 crew members.
