Mazda 767B race car catches fire at Laguna Seca

A rare 1989 Mazda 767B race car caught fire in the paddock at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca during the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Pre-Reunion event. The vehicle, bearing racing number 203, was parked under a tent when flames emerged from the left side of the engine cover.

Crew members used fire extinguishers to quickly contain the blaze. No injuries were reported, but the car—a private unit owned by American businessman Tony McIntosh—sustained significant damage and was forced to withdraw from the remaining sessions of the event.

The affected vehicle is chassis 003, one of only three Mazda 767B units ever produced. This Group C prototype was a precursor to the 787B, which won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1991. While the fire caused concern among enthusiasts, officials clarified that the legendary 787B was not involved in the incident. Plans are reportedly underway to restore the 767B.
