Mazda and Yazaki reduce CX-5 wire harness types by 80%

Mazda Motor Corporation and Yazaki Corporation have announced the first implementation of a new wire harness production method in the upcoming Mazda CX-5. This initiative is the result of a collaborative effort started in early 2022 aimed at achieving both 'localization' and 'automation' in the manufacturing process.

By integrating product design with production engineering from the early stages of vehicle development, the companies have optimized the vehicle's architecture. This optimization has led to an approximately 80% reduction in the number of different wire harness types compared to the previous CX-5 model.

The new supply chain involves Yazaki Corporation procuring components and completing the wire harnesses at a subsidiary facility in Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. These finished products are then delivered to Mazda's manufacturing plants in Hiroshima and Yamaguchi Prefectures. This localized production model is intended to enhance supply chain resilience, improve logistics efficiency, and reduce environmental impact while ensuring the transfer of technical skills to the next generation of workers.
