Mazda announces development plans for BT-50 and CX-5
Mazda is advancing its product roadmap with updates regarding the BT-50 pickup and the CX-5 SUV. Vinesh Bhindi, CEO of Mazda Australia, confirmed that a new generation of the BT-50 is in development and is expected to launch around 2028. While specific design and engine details remain undisclosed, industry analysts suggest two potential paths: continuing a partnership with Isuzu to utilize shared platforms with the D-Max, or expanding cooperation with Changan to access new electrified technologies, such as extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) systems.
Regarding its SUV lineup, Mazda has decided that the next-generation CX-5 will feature a new full hybrid powertrain, likely utilizing upcoming SKYACTIV-Z technology, but will not include a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) variant. The company intends to reserve PHEV options for larger SUV models, such as the CX-60. This strategy appears to target markets like the United States, where traditional hybrid popularity significantly outpaces PHEV market share.
