Mazda Announces Electric‑Ready Fifth‑Generation MX‑5 Roadster
Mazda Motor Corporation said the fifth generation of its MX‑5 roadster will debut in 2028 on a completely new platform that can accommodate a future fully electric powertrain. CEO Masahiro Moro explained the aim is to keep the MX‑5 lightweight—targeting a total weight of about 1,200 kg even with batteries—while preserving the car’s classic driving feel.
The new MX‑5 will also be offered with a 2.5‑litre Skyactiv‑Z gasoline engine and may include a mild‑hybrid system. Mazda plans to use conventional engineering materials rather than costly carbon‑fiber composites to achieve the weight goal. The current model will remain in production until the new generation arrives.
