Mazda CX-5 gains top safety ratings as third‑gen model launches globally

Mazda has introduced the third generation of its CX‑5 crossover for the 2026 model year. The new CX‑5 is larger than its predecessor, with a length of 4.7 m, width of 1.9 m, height of 1.7 m and a wheelbase extended by 115 mm. It is offered with a single power‑train: a 2.5‑litre e‑Skyactiv G mild‑hybrid paired with a six‑speed automatic, delivering 141 PS and 24.2 kg·m of torque. The vehicle’s weight is 1,664 kg and cargo capacity has grown to 583 L, with rear seats that fold to create up to 2,019 L of space.

Safety assessments have been outstanding. In the United States, the IIHS awarded the CX‑5 its TOP SAFETY PICK+ for the third consecutive year, bringing Mazda’s total to 100 such recognitions across its lineup. The model also earned five‑star ratings from Euro NCAP and ANCAP, highlighting strong crash protection and advanced driver‑assist systems such as automatic emergency braking, lane‑keeping aid and a 48‑V mild‑hybrid starter‑generator. A Hungarian road‑test noted the vehicle’s spacious interior and high‑quality fit‑and‑finish, while also reporting occasional issues with the Android‑based infotainment system and Apple CarPlay connectivity.
